Frequency of distortion and dissatisfaction with body image in people who underwent bariatric surgery in Brazil
Abstract
Body image is a multifaceted construct who exerts a strong influence on the person undergoing bariatric surgery. There are few studies in the literature that establish which aspect of body image is the objective of the analysis, that is, if is the perceptive or attitudinal dimension having had investigated, and who present more than one instrument to validate the collected data. Thus, this study aimed to identify the frequency of body image distortion and the frequency of body image dissatisfaction, in underwent bariatric surgery Brazilian people. This was an analytical, quantitative cross-sectional study, with a sample obtained by convenience and an online questionnaire available on Google Forms®. This population study was mostly female, with a higher frequency in the age range among 40 and 59 years and undergoing surgery time greater than 25 months. In Body Shape Questionnaire, the highest percentages of distortion with body image were found in periods of 25 months or more (44%) and 0 to 6 months (40.4%). In the Body Shape Questionnaire, higher percentages of body image dissatisfaction were observed on 25 or more months (44.0%) and 0 to 6 months (40.4%) time after bariatric surgery. In the silhouette scale, from 0 to 6 months, the highest degree of dissatisfaction appeared (93.3%) and between 13 and 24 months, the maximum satisfaction with body image (21.7%). We concluded that there was variation in the frequency of satisfaction with body image in the postoperative period of bariatric surgery.
