Factors related to the development of obesity in childhood noticed in a health centre
Abstract
Introduction and Aim: There are several factors that can affect the development of childhood obesity. Thus, this study aimed to identifythe prevalence of factors related to childhood obesity, occurring at birth and during the first year of life, and profile of children treated at the Pediatric Nutrition, Federal University of Pelotas. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study, conducted with a child under 12 years of age, in the period from May to July 2011. Weight and gestational age at birth were analyzed; supply of other milks other than breast, in the first year of life; introduction of complementary feeding and the use of pacifiers and bottles. Statistical analyzes were performed using Stata9.1®, assuming statistical significance level of 5%. Discussion, Results and Conclusion: 43 children with a mean age of 7 years and 9 months (± 31 months), and 93% of them was over weight were interviewed. The majority (95.4%) of the children were breast fed, though often not exclusively. The median duration of exclusive breast feeding was 4.5 (IQR 1, 6) months. Pacifier use occurred in 58.1% of children and the useof bottles in 88.4% of them. The sample, comprised primarily of children over weight, showed inadequacies in power in the first year of life, especially with respect to breast feeding.
