Risk of sarcopenia and health conditions in institutionalized elderly with osteoporosis
Abstract
Introduction: Osteoporosis is an insidious metabolic disease, characterized by bone fragility, where there is greater absorption in relation to bone synthesis. Due to its numerous complications, such as the increased risk of falls, fractures, hospitalizations, very elderly need specific care often not provided by the family or people close. Thus, many debilitated elderlies are referred to long-term institutions. In addition, the institutionalized elderly is more likely to develop sarcopenia. Objective: To verify the risk of sarcopenia and health conditions in institutionalized elderly with osteoporosis. Materials and methods: A population-based cross-sectional study conducted at long-stay institutions in Passo Fundo-RS (2016-2018). The population was composed of 281 residents, evaluated for sociodemographic and health variables (medical records), risk of sarcopenia (SARC-F), cognitive status (Mini Mental State Examination) and functional capacity (Katz Index). The statistical analysis used the descriptive statistics and the chi-square test with Pearson's relation (p≤0.05). Results: The sample consisted of 50 elderly patients with osteoporosis (83.40 ± 7.91 years). The risk of sarcopenia was 74.0%, with a significant relationship with females (p=0.033), dementia (p=0.007) and dependence to perform daily life activities (p=0.000). Conclusion: elderly institutionalized with a diagnosis of osteoporosis have a high risk of sarcopenia, especially females, with dementia or dependence to perform activities of daily living.
