Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effect of dry extract of green tea, white tea and Caralluma fimbriataon weight loss and total serum concentrations of glucose and cholesterol in humans. Material and Methods: Randomized trial with 60 students of the nutrition course. The participants were divided into five Groups: Control (C); Green Tea (CV); White Tea (CB); Caralluma fimbriata (CA) and Placebo (PL). Groups CV, CB and CA received capsules containing 500 mg of dry extract, 1 hour before lunch, for 30 days, and Group PL received capsules containing amide. One the first day, and after 30 days, the following data were collected: anthropometric data, level of physical activity, dietary frequency and total glucose and cholesterol serum concentrations. Results: The retention rate of participants in the trial was 75% (n= 45). At the end of the trial, no significant differences were observed in body weight and BMI. A reduction was observed in mean waist circumference values in Group CV; and in glucose concentrations in Groups CV and CB. Group PL presented higher mean concentrations of serum cholesterol than Group C. It is emphasized that Group CA presented a lowermean value for this variable than Group C. Conclusion: Green tea provided lower WC values, though none of the treatments presented a significant effect in relation to body weight or total glucose and cholesterol serum concentrations.
