Abstract

Introduction: The presence of weight regain (WR) and dissatisfaction with body image can impact the perception of Quality of Life (QOL) in the late postoperative period of bariatric surgery. It’s relevant to investigate the correlation between these factors. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out with 45 women who had undergone bariatric surgery for at least 24 months. The proportion of excess weight loss (EWL) and WR was calculated, questions related to satisfaction with body self-image and the Short Form Healthy Survey questionnaire (SF-36) was applied to describe the perception of QOL. The data were analyzed in SPSS, v.21. Results and Discussion: Most participants were successful in EWL (78.6 ± 27.9%), there was a significant WR in 55.6% and 68.9% of women were satisfied with their self-image. There was an inverse correlation between WR and the functional capacity domains of QOL (r2 = -0.414; p = 0.002), limitation due to physical aspects (r2 = - 0.429; p = 0.002) and pain domain (r2 = - 0.256; p = 0.045). There was a direct correlation between satisfaction with body image and the domains general health status (r2 = 0.330; p = 0.013), vitality (r2 = 0.268; p = 0.038), social aspects (r2 = 0.314; p = 0.018) and emotional aspects (r2 = 0.286; p = 0.029). Conclusion: The occurrence of WR and dissatisfaction with self-image can impact the perception of QOL after surgery.
