Which SNPs in the FTO gene are associated with breast cancer risk? a systematic review
Abstract
Objective: To investigate the FTO gene SNPs involved in susceptibility to breast cancer in women. Materials and Methods: The article is a systematic review of the literature, following the PICOS strategy for elaborating the research question, and the PRISMA method for selecting articles. The articles found were selected from the databases: PubMed, Science Direct, Capes and BVS, with the descriptors: Breast Cancer, FTO gene and Polymorphisms, using the Boolean operator and. Case-control studies, no publication time limit, in English, Espanhol and Portuguese, which analyzed single nucleotide polymorphisms in the female population, which characterized risk for breast cancer, were included. Results: Ten studies were selected for this review. The few studies found reveal a lack of research that addresses this topic, which is of paramount importance for public health. The SNPs of the FTO gene may cause risk of breast cancer in some populations, such as Chinese and North American women, with variants rs9939609, rs16953002, but in Brazilian women this association was not found. Furthermore, we found that the rs11075995 polymorphism is associated with a higher risk of basal subtype breast cancer. Conclusion: With this review it was possible to analyze that some variants of the FTO gene cause a higher risk of breast cancer in some populations. However, this risk appears to be more associated with ethnicity, lifestyle, physical inactivity, smoking, and the molecular subtype of breast cancer. Finally, more studies are needed to add to the results found here.
