Obesity and lung function: an analysis of 2.385 adults
Abstract
Introduction: Obesity is a world health problem, responsible for a growing number of evitable deaths in all age groups. The effects of obesity on respiratory function is not completely understood. Objective: To analyze the association between obesity and lung function in adult individuals, by identifying lung ventilation disorders through spirometry examination. Materials and Methods: Here, data of body mass index (BMI) was collected from 2385 individuals, and obesity was classified as I, II or III grade. Spirometer test was performed to identify respiratory diseases and then correlated to the obesity grade. Results: Majority of investigated population presented grade I obesity. Respiratory capacity decreased with increasing age and degree of obesity for men and women, as impairments of FVC (L), FEV1 (L), FEV1/FVC (%), FEF and PEF were found according to predicted of each patient. Thus, the Restrictive Ventilatory Disorder was prevalent with the aging process and more present with the increase in the degree of obesity. Conclusion: DVR is more prevalent with the aging process and with an increase in the degree of obesity. Spirometry demonstrates that there is impairment in respiratory function due to the accumulation of adipose tissue in the human body. It is important to analyze the spirometric tests by age range in order to identify the differences in lung volumes related to senescence in obese adult individuals, impacting the diagnosis and therapeutic approach by health professionals.
