The complexity of obesity before and after bariatric surgery
Abstract
Introduction: Considered a chronic disease, obesity presents the clinical approach as the first treatment option, linked to multiprofessional follow-up, prioritizing the promotion of health and the prevention of other chronic diseases. Satisfying long-term results for patients after surgical treatment depends, therefore, on the adoption of changes in lifestyle and health habits, such as food interventions and physical activity. Aim: Verify the sleeve bariatric surgery repercussion on quality of life and comorbidities of obese patients. Materials and Methods: A transversal study was conduced applying a questionnaire to gather the data about patients of a private clinic at Caxias do Sul who were subjected to sleeve bariatric surgery. To analyze the data the SPSS software version 20.0 was used. Results: the research indicated the prevalence of obesity in women, most of them married, with more than 36 years and with more than 12 years of formal education. The obesity diagnose was carried out at young age, was accompanied by family historic of this disease and the obesity treatment was initiated at the age range of 16years, using medication and with multiprofessional care. Beyond significant anthropometric modifications, the surgery had impact on the comorbidities, reflecting in the reduction of diseases and digesting complaints and consequent improve on quality of life. Conclusion: the research showed that multidisciplinary care before and after the surgery is a major fact for the quality of life improvement and reduction of patient diseases.
