Effects of bariatric surgery on quality of life of patients with obesity: an integrative review
Abstract
The present article aims to perform an integrative review of the literature with the objective of identifying the type of bariatric surgery (BS) and quality of life (QoL) evaluation tools most used, and analyze the main benefits of BS. This review included bibliographic databases PubMed, Virtual Health Library (BVS), ScienceDirect and SciELO. We used the descriptors "obesity", "bariatric surgery" and "quality of life", which were drawn from the key terms at "Descritores em Ciências da Saúde" (DeCS). It was identified 393 studies, of which 39 were selected after full reading and according to the established inclusion criteria. Most of these studies shows that there is a general improvement in QoL perceived by patients in the late postoperative period. We conclude that one of the most effective ways to treat severe obesity is BS, which causes individuals to lose weight and treat obesity co-morbidities, in addition to lifestyle changes promoted by the new post-surgical habits.
