Abstract

The objective of the present study is to analyze the efficiency of bariatric surgery on weight loss and against to severe obesity. Methods: the technique included a bibliographic research in 3 books and at scientific on-line magazines Medline, Scielo, lilacs, being selected 64 articles, since 1992. Obesity is an illness characterized for an abnormal accumulation of body fat in relation to the body size, that can result in many complications to health in a short or long-term, being considered , nowadays, the biggest nutritional disorder in development countries. According to WHO (World Health Organization), obesity is classified by BMI (Body Mass Index) and in risks of mortality independent of sex and age. The clinical treatment for severe obesity (nutritional education, physical activity and medicines) usually doesn’t work, and that’s why, bariatric surgery is one option from treatment. Patients with BMI≥40 kg/m² or ≥35kg/m² with comorbities related. There are 3 types of chirurgical techniques: restrictive, disabsortives and mix. Researches involving bariatric surgery and weight loss show that a large amount of candidates to surgery have ages between 37,9 and 39,7, the technique more used is bypass gastric (Fobi-Capella), the period of attendance of operated patients is between 1 and 2 years after surgery and, the weight body loss as effect of the surgery, happened in all studies. The surgery, wowever, does not conclude the treatment for obesity. It’s started a period of 2 years of changes on behavior, nourishment and exercises.
