Food habits in the covid-19 pandemic: a literature review
Abstract
Introduction: This study sought to address the impacts caused in the population's eating habits during social isolation. Objective: To investigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the population's eating habits. Materials and Methods: This is a review of articles published in indexed journals, from a search in the Capes, Pubmed, BVS and EBSCO databases, using the descriptors "coronavirus" and "comportments alimentary". Original articles published in national and international journals, published in 2020 and 2021, available in Portuguese, English and Spanish were considered eligible. Results: 376 were identified and, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 29 were selected for the study. The literature showed that there was a reduction in the consumption of unprocessed foods and weight gain. However, opposite patterns were noticed, with more ingestion of fresh fruits and vegetables, less fast-food consumption, reduced alcohol intake, and healthier eating behaviors presented when compared to eating habits before the pandemic. Discussion: The Covid-19 pandemic led to stressful conditions, which caused changes in eating habits, but keeping them healthy, through a well-balanced diet that contains all essential nutrients and bioactive compounds, is key to enhancing immune functions. Conclusion: Longitudinal studies are needed to understand Covid-19 pandemic impacts on eating habits, as well as to guide actions to address the disease and this global phenomenon unfolding in the health of Brazilians.
