Abstract

The muscular Dystrophy include a kit of genetic origin pathologies that affect the skeletal musculature. These pathologies differ among themselves, according to the type of the reached musculature, the genetic origin, the starting age and the evolutive status. The dystrophy evolution, as well as, other neuromuscular diseases, is predictable and it is already reported by the world literature, but the nutritional aspect and its engagements, through the bilateral concern of the nutritional risk – obesity and mal nutrition – which are still less analyzed. The evaluation of the nutritional status should be part of the routine of the whole attentive process towards health, in order to identify, through it, the nutritional risks and the intervention’s opportunities. This study evaluated the nutritional status of 40 patients with muscular dystrophy, 90% of those cases are about Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), divided into two groups, from five to twenty-five years old, whose average was 15,5 years old. This study related the nutritional status of the patients with the food’s consumption and the evolution of the disease, during the previous and post periods of the appliance of a Nutritional Education Program (NEP) and besides that, the fixation of the learning process of the caretakers and patients, through the food habits’ change. The classification of the nutritional status of those patients was not modified, but there was a discrete improvement in the food consumption and a gain of weight.
