Influence of gastric bypass in Y roux in the parameters of metabolic syndrome: an integrative review
Abstract
Introduction and objective: The conventional treatment of obesity does not produce satisfactory results for some individuals, requiring a more effective and invasive intervention, increasing the indication of bariatric surgery mainly in cases of morbid obesity. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of bariatric surgery on the parameters of the metabolic syndrome. Materials and Methods: an integrative review of the literature was performed with PubMed, Scielo and Lilacs databases, published between 2007 and 2017, using bariatric surgery (OR) "obesity surgery" OR "metabolic surgery" OR "roux-en-y gastric bypass") AND ("metabolic syndrome" or "metabolic syndrome x"). Results: The ten articles elucidated a decrease of 85.3% in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome; 47.3% in abdominal obesity, 87.3% in altered fasting glycemia, 77.3% in arterial hypertension, 37.9% increase in HDL prevalence at adequate levels, and hypertriglyceridemia presented a fall of 84.4% of cases. Discussion: resolution of altered fasting glycemia and hypertriglyceridemia was found. The increase in HDL was the parameter that was less prominent among the results, followed by the decrease of the waist circumference. Improvement of the metabolic syndrome occurs through decreased food intake, weight loss, increased insulin sensitivity and altered blood levels of gastrointestinal hormones. Conclusion: Bariatric surgery promoted a positive impact on the parameters of the metabolic syndrome, significantly reducing the prevalence of the condition, but additional studies are necessary to promote a greater relationship between the exposed factors.
