Analysis of protein and micronutrients in human milk samples
Abstract
Objectives: To determine the amount of proteins and micronutrients contained in breast milk of nursing mothers treated at a Family Health Unit, in relation to those described in the literature and highlighting their importance in feeding. Methods: Quantitative, descriptive study with cross - sectional design. Nursing mothers were included in exclusive breastfeeding, from 21 days to 6 months incomplete. Obtaining infant and infant data (anthropometric data), as well as maternal milk for analysis of protein and minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and zinc). At the moment of collection of the breast milk sample, she was advising on the milking, hygiene and storage of the same, following the protocol recommended by Fiocruz. Results: The sample consisted of 14 nursing mothers and infants from 21 days to 6 months incomplete. In the analyzed breastmilk composition, we observed a significant difference in mean values of protein and minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and zinc) when compared to those described in the literature. There was no significant difference when we compared the mean values of the breast milk composition of our sample with the maternal body mass index. Conclusion: the composition of the analyzed breast milk presents a significant difference of its average values when compared to those described in the literature, considering that the geographical and cultural factors may influence the values associated with the composition of the breast milk of the samples and that are few studies on the subject.
