Perception of nutrition scholars about the long-term effectiveness of restrictive diets methods for weight loss and control
Abstract
Restrictive diets continue to be the treatment most sought by the vast majority of obese individuals, although studies claim that their success is limited in the long run. Behavioral Nutrition has as its premise the valorization of intuitive feeding and the practice of not prescribing restrictive diets. The objective of this study was to evaluate how the academics of the Nutrition course of a private institution in the city of Vitoria-ES are realizing the long - term effectiveness of restrictive diets methods for weight loss and control. A population-based, exploratory, descriptive, quantitative and cross-sectional field survey was conducted with primary data collection using closed structured questionnaires. The study population consisted of 328 students, which gave non-probabilistic sampling with a 90% confidence level and a sample error margin of 6%, with a sample of 128 students. It was found that 82.03% of the students do not believe in the effectiveness of restrictive diets for weight loss and long-term weight maintenance. 50.00% have knowledge about the Behavioral Nutrition approach to clinical care, and 65.63% believe in the efficiency of a non-prescriptive nutritional approach (diets) for weight loss and long-term weight maintenance. Knowledge about the Behavioral Nutrition approach suggests an association with the belief in the ineffectiveness of restrictive diets, indicating that knowing this approach contributes to a more critical view regarding the effects of long-term diets.
