Association of eating behavior with body image and mental health conditions in nutrition university students
Abstract
The lifestyle profile of college students can predict concerns about body dissatisfaction, dysfunctional aspects of eating and mental health. With that, the objective of this study was to evaluate the association between eating behavior with body image and mental health conditions in university students from the interior of Minas Gerais. This is a quantitative, cross-sectional study, in which students of the nutrition course enrolled at Centro Universitário Presidente Tancredo Neves filled out questionnaires using validated instruments for each variable of the study using Google Forms. Different eating behaviors (restrictive, emotional and intuitive), body dissatisfaction, negative affect and anxiety symptoms were evaluated. From the data collected, descriptive statistics of the variables under investigation were performed, using absolute and relative frequency, for categorical data and for discrete and continuous variables, mean and standard deviation were calculated. To assess the association between the variables, Pearson's correlation test was used, with a significance level of p < 0.05. It was possible to observe in a university sample of the nutrition course in the interior of Minas Gerais, increased averages in restrictive eating behavior, in the dissatisfaction they have in their bodies and in the symptomatology of anxiety, together with negative affect. So what correlations indicate dysfunctional eating behaviors are related to worse body image in these students.
